The discovery of Bali
When Martijn finished his high school, he started working and saving money for his first big trip. Internet has just came up. Sending emails with hotmail and occasionly a postcard was the way to go :-) With a analogue camera and a Lonely Planet from South East Asia in his backpack, he took off in May 2000.
Indonesia was my first destination. The only image I had in my mind was from a friend’s sister who had been there. She told her brother that the monkeys there were really tame. So that was literally the only image in my mind from Bali, his sister with a monkey. Pre instagram.
What a mindblowing impression for the senses, for the first time in the tropics. I had an amazing time with friends. I started surfing there. Hanging out in Kuta, full moon parties overseeing ( a still emty ) Dreamland. I stayed for two months. Then I continued my journey to Australia.
I came back in 2005 and again in 2010. Then, when I just thought I had seen enough of Bali, one day before I would fly home, I met Madé. I extended my ticket.
Madé was working as a spa manager so a logical follow up to us was starting a spa ourselves. We set up a crowdfunding to be able to make a start. That was in 2013. We are still thankful for the support we got from family and friends back then. When the Corona pandamic started we could not open our doors for two years. The spa did not survive that unfortunately. It left us bankrupt.
Still we are thankful for this great experience. For the people we have met and for the appreciation we have got from our customers. If you want to get a bit of a feeling, watch our video Ata & the story of Bali Spring.
And so it started, because now we want to share our experience of Bali with you. From a Balinese - Dutch perspective. We want to take you to Bali outside of the tourist stops. We want to show you the incredible Balinese handicraft. Experience the culture, collect art, see beautiful places, taste the greatest food and use original Balinese products.
Warm greetings, Martijn, Made and Morgan
